Portland's Providence Bridge Pedal
Challenge Level: Easy and Medium Options
Time Needed: One Sunday Morning
Imagine traffic being diverted so that bikes could rule the road. And the bridges that span a city. That's what happens once a year in Portland. 30,000 people converge to make this one of the biggest cycling events in the country. Warning: do not go on this ride if you're into solitude. Won't happen.
Challenge Level: Medium
Time Needed: 3+ hours
Riding with Ron and Steve through Ankeny, Independence, Monmouth, Rickreall, and Salem
Challenge Level: Medium
Time Needed: 2-3 hours
Just south of Salem, between Liberty Road and I-5.
This ride is the antidote for just about anything.
Tour De Lopez
Challenge Level: Medium
Time Needed: 3 hours for the longest option
I took this ride with Steve-O in April '09. Memorable trip to the San Juan Islands, Washington. Lessons learned: having an asthma action plan, and having a good friend along.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Bicycle Touring in the San Juan Islands
Challenge Level: Difficult (especially Orcas Island)
Time Needed: 4-5 days
2006 bicycle camping trip with my sons. Getting there with all the gear, a few bucks and some advil. Memories with T-Bone and G? Priceless.
Portland's East Bank Esplanade
Challenge Level: Easy
Time Needed: 1-2 hours
One of the very best short-ride options you'll find anywhere. Take in views of a wildlife refuge, the Willamette River, Mt. Hood, and the Portland cityscape in a matter of minutes. With no elevation changes and a few very tame on-street sections, this is a perfect outing to bring along less experienced riders.
